Thinktank Science Centre, UK
HKD was lead consultant commissioned to deliver a Masterplan for Thinktank, the Birmingham science museum, in 2007. The new plan reorganises the circulation relocating the entrance to the ground floor. Access will be through a new Community Voices gallery.
As well as accommodating the 8,000 sqm of interactive galleries, the new plan relocates café, shop and ticketing and introduces a new Science Garden and green link to Birmingham City Centre.
HKD had worked previously on the redesign of several galleries at Thinktank, including the under 5’s gallery Kids in the City and the Future Horizons Gallery.
The Future Horizons Gallery now accommodates a state of the art digital planetarium, teaching area and new exhibit displays, which include interactive exhibits Drive a Mars Rover, Dock a Spaceship and Build an Alien. In 2007-8 300,000 visitors including 70,000 school children visited Thinktank.
