Royal Ballet School

White Lodge Museum & Ballet Resource

HKD worked with the client team to develop the Interpretive plan to create the first Museum of Dance in the UK.

The new museum is housed in White Lodge in Richmond Park. Built as a royal hunting lodge it was built by King George II and is shown on the current Queens birth certificate as her place of birth. White Lodge is now a working school, home to the Royal Ballet Junior School. The new museum was located in the crescent rooms which were previously the junior dorm rooms.

The museum weaves together the story of the house and its Royal connections with the development of British Ballet. The museum put on display for the first time valuable archive materials. The layered interpretation makes it suitable for professional as well as casual visitors.

The layered glass displays are animated by natural changes in light as visitors pass through the gallery creating animated environment suitable for a live art form.
