Bolshoi to Belfast - The Theatre of Costume

Belfast City Council

A unique exhibition showcasing costumes never before seen out of Russia in the dramatic setting of Crumlin Road Gaol.

We worked with world renowned Bolshoi Theatre and the Russian Museum of Ethnography to present an exhibition telling the story of how the traditional costumes of the people are re-imagined in the famous 20th Century ballet and opera designs.

Displayed in an unrestored wing of the Grade II Listed Crumlin Road Gaol, each cell was transformed into a showcase creating striking links between the performance costume and Traditional dress.

The response to the exhibition was overwhelming, with visitor numbers increasing week-on week. A full programme of accompanying activities including public talks, debates and workshops as well as a film season ran alongside the exhibition.
