A Change of Scenery for the Ramsgate Tunnels

Ramsgate, UK

HKD has been working with Ramsgate Tunnels on exciting new plans for a major new attraction to recreate life in Ramsgate before the devastating raids of World War II. The ambitious project will stage a 1940s street scene and new welcome facilities within Ramsgate’s 157-year-old Victorian railway tunnel.

Tunnels volunteer Phil Spain explained, “The new attraction will increase capacity to over 100,000 visitors. The new 1940s street scene will unlock the opportunity to tell the story of Ramsgate leading up to World War II with exhibits, storytelling, and workshops in a period setting.

“The new street scene will enable us to create climate-controlled spaces in which our growing museum collection can be displayed in a contemporary setting. A new welcome zone will include a reception area, shop, café and community space.”

We have been working with Tunnels stakeholders to develop the design framework for this project, which will now progress to fundraising. The project is especially exciting to us owing to its proximity to our studio in Margate – we are proud to be contributing to the rich heritage offer of the region.
