The Grade 1 listed Pierhead Building stands on the waterfront of Cardiff Bay as one of the city’s most familiar landmarks, adjacent to the Senedd building and the Millennium Centre. The building’s history is the story of Cardiff. Built in 1897 as the headquarters for the Bute Dock Company, it became the administrative office for the Port of Cardiff in 1947 and finally became an education centre for the National Assembly in 2001.
HKD was tasked with re-interpreting the building to provide public access and purpose for the building in 2010. HKD designed a flexible infrastructure to support future programming and a suite of exhibits which give the visitor access to the history of the building while explaining its role in the development of Cardiff Bay and the surrounding area.
