It is big, listed and red. A much loved icon but what is it for? Seen everyday on the morning BBC news but the question most often asked is – Can I go in?

The Pierhead Building in Cardiff Bay is a Grade 1 listed building adjacent to the
Senedd building and the Wales Millennium Centre. It stands as one of the city of Cardiff's most familiar landmarks.

The challenge: to take an iconic heritage building and give it contemporary relevance. A place where visitors could celebrate their past and have a say in their future.

HKD worked with the Welsh Assembly team and DCA to identify future uses for the building. Then our researchers and writer searched the archives, scoured local and national museums and spoke to local community groups and historical societies to track down artefacts, documents, stories and deeds that could be used to tell the story of the building.

To meet the diverse needs of the stakeholders we designed a flexible infrastructure which could be used to support future events includung community and schools projects. When not in use by other groups the displays tell the story of the Pierhead Building and its role at the heart of the development of Cardiff.

Displays include an immersive six screen film biography of the building, animated Cardiff Bay timeline, real-time polling on current issues in Wales and features community memories.
